Are you registered with your local GP practice? If not register today

People living in Leicester are being reminded to register with their local GP practice to enable them to access free health and care treatment locally when they need it, including the Covid-19 vaccine.

GP practices oversee all aspects of a person’s health throughout their lives and are the first point of contact for NHS care for most patients. They provide a range of services to support people when they are feeling unwell, need medical treatment or require guidance around any new or existing health conditions. GPs are also able to help patients decide which treatment is right for them.

Local GP, Dr Rajiv Wadhwa, said: “It’s important that all our residents register with their local GP, even for people who are only due to be in Leicester for a short period of time, whether they are here to work or study, or on an extended visit – registering with a GP should be high on everyone’s priority list. It will mean that medical treatment in the community can be accessed without delay when they need it.

“GP practices are located centrally in every area of the city and we are able to work with patients to manage their health so that they are less likely to require hospital care. We help patients to make decisions about their conditions and should patients require more specialist care we are able to work with other providers to help make this happen.”

Patients registered with a GP practice benefit from access to; GPs, nurses, community based services, as well as guidance from pharmacists and other trained health and care professionals.

Dr Wadhwa continues: “Anyone can register with a GP practice and we have dedicated support available from our GP Registration Officers who are on hand to help anyone in Leicester who is unsure about how to register with a GP practice, or what information they would need.

“I strongly urge anyone that has yet to register themselves or a family member in their care to do so at the earliest opportunity as it will ensure they are able to access vital services such as the Covid-19 vaccination programme. We must do everything we can to stay well and protect our loved ones and communities from viruses such as Flu and Covid-19 when we can – please don’t wait until you are unwell to register.”
